Wellington City Council Housing through its Community Action Programme hosted a special day for WCC housing tenants in Te Papa on Neighbours’ Day-23 March 2013.

Dubbed Tenants’ Summit, the event provided an opportunity for all tenants of City Housing to reach out to each other, make new contacts, build new networks and learn something new, which was what Neighbours Day was about.

Wellington ICT supported Tenants Summit with a short interactive session called “What’s in the box?’ Hub managers Barry Komfur and Beth Te Aho took turns to showcase tenant website, Community Voice and couple of cool things tenants will be able to do using technology and the Internet. These along with basic digital literacy training are available for free at Council-owned computer hubs in Arlington Flats, Newtown Park Flats and Central Park Apartments.

Through a mixed of interactive sharing, games and question and answers and special sessions by WCC-CAP partners, city housing tenants had a fun and enjoyable day.

The WICT managed WCC housing computer hubs won this year's NZ Open Source Awards (Social Services category).

Picture taken by Kristina D.C. Hoeppner

WCC Computer Hubs and the Souphub jointly bagged the 2012 New Zealand Open Source Awards (NZOSA) for Social Services in a ceremony held at the Amora Hotel on 7 November 2012. The NZOSA is a biennial event to recognise and promote contributions of New Zealanders to free and open source projects and free and open source philosophy as well as exemplary use of free and open source by New Zealand organisations.

Wellington ICT has been managing the Housing Computer Hubs for Wellington City Council since 2009 to promote digital inclusion and tenant participation and engagement. The hubs have provided city housing tenants access free and equitable access technology, Internet and digital literacy training to equip and empower them towards full participation in today’s knowledge society.

Telecentres or computer hubs have been proven world over as the mechanism of choice for digital inclusion. Hubs have served as access points for delivery of government e-services, centres for community activities, and importantly, means for disadvantaged and marginalised communities to have a “voice” over their futures. Having two different hub initiatives jointly win the prestigious award is a step towards seeing knowledge hubs in all community centres throughout the city, the region and the country.

WICT recognises the efforts WICT hubs managers Barry Komfur and Elizabeth Te Aho have always gone the extra mile in running the hubs, training tenants as well as, passionately championing Open Source technology for all.

WICT also thanks the members of the computer hubs steering group (WICT Chairperson Heather Newell, WCC-CAP manager Rosie Gallen, WCC senior advisor Corrina Mcgregor), Daniel Reurich of Centurion Computer Technology Ltd, WICT trustees, WICT and WCC-Housing staff and volunteers, whose undying support have contributed towards the project’s success.

The situation we all face is that we will be functionally impaired at some point in our lives.

Note: We are only classed as disabled if the community or environment does not help us manage impairment.

Right now 20% of us are living with an impairment…That’s 863,160 Kiwis

This is increasing, in 2030, 25% of Kiwis will be 65+

50% of people 65+ are impaired

This discussion introduces tools and references to help your audiences understand your materials.

The results of an ICT survey of Wellington-based NFPs has presented by Wellington ICT and Massey University on 24 Oct.

We all heard government and our major funders talk about the benefits of shared services and non-profit groups working co-operatively. We know there are benefits and opportunities as well as pitfalls.

To identify the community and voluntary sector’s thoughts on the value of shared services and the role of ICT (Information and Communications Technology or computing) in their respective organisations, Wellington ICT ran an online survey sometime April 2012. Implemented nationally across the whole community and voluntary sector, the survey garnered about 541 responses of which 147 responses came from the Wellington Region.

The survey was designed to give organisations an opportunity to express their views on the concept of ICT shared services as well as identify potential components of the same. Survey data covering the Wellington Region have been analysed and a report has been prepared by Massey University.

Wellington ICT acknowledges Wellington City Council, Drs. Raja Peter and Barbara Crump of Massey University, Trustee Kathy Olsen of Squiz and John Denise, as well as Volunteer Wellington, WELCOSS and other organisations for the immense support provided.

The report findings have presented in a session on 24th October 2012 at Committee Room 2, Wellington City Council. Attended by main Wellington NFPs, umbrella organisations, funding agencies, and government, a lively discussion ensued with a promise of more discussion to come.

For comments or suggestions, as well as expression of interest to participate in ongoing discussion on piloting a shared services model for NFPs, please email sharedservices@wellingtonict.org.nz.
